Woman Buys ‘Damaged Pup’ After Breeder Says He ‘Couldn’t Sell Her Or Do Anything With Her’
There’s no such thing as a damaged dog. Even with some inborn deformity, no canine deserves this label. And it definitely doesn’t deserve to be overlooked!
Sadly, in the breeding industry, this isn’t the case.
A dog’s deformity usually equals damage, which is why plenty of these four-legged beauties end up on euthanasia lists at no fault of their own.
Phoenix, at only a few weeks of age, is exhibit A! This South Carolina Golden Retriever was facing the inevitable after being born with a leg deformity that prevented her from “serving the purpose.”
Then came a miracle!
The Unexpected New Family Member
Deanna Crowder, from Charleston, South Carolina, contacted the breeder from whom she got her five-year-old Golden Retriever to inquire about the upcoming litter.
She and her husband wanted to add a male Golden pup to their family when the breeder told them about Phoenix.
This little baby girl was born with a missing toe and couldn’t make big money or serve the purpose of breeding. So, the breeder offered to sell her, too, for ‘just’ $200, alongside her brother, who was priced at $1000.
Knowing that these pups usually end up on euthanasia lists, Deanna and her husband could not let that happen. They wanted to be sure nothing bad would happen to Phoenix, so they agreed and brought this sweetie home.
What they didn’t know, though, was that Phoenix’s case was much more complicated.
She suffered from the condition known as ectrodactyly syndrome, which represents a limb developmental defect that makes a dog’s paw have a claw-like appearance.
But, as time passed, they noticed that Phoenix was limping and having difficulties walking, too, and it sure wasn’t due to her syndrome. After a few vet checkups and an X-ray, the family discovered the shocking truth.
Alongside her claw paw, Phoenix suffered from limb abnormality, which required surgery.
“She’s in fact not just missing a toe, her leg as a whole is unique and complicated,” Deanna stated in a TikTok post.
Her family didn’t think twice. They wanted to help Phoenix have a normal life, and they immediately scheduled the procedure.
“We decided that, no matter what it took, we were going to do everything we can for her to give her the life she deserves,” wrote Deanna.
She’s Getting More Pawesome With Every New Day
At only eleven weeks of age, this pup has already been through so much. And, on top of all that, she endured complicated surgery and came out of it as a brand-new girl.
After a complicated procedure, Phoenix took everyone by surprise. Her recovery speed was amazing, and she was already on the path to a normal, happy life within weeks.
Even better, her other two siblings did not treat her any differently. Phoenix was welcomed into her doggo pack as one of them, and the dogs didn’t see her paw deformity as a weakness.
On the contrary, this fantastic trio couldn’t wait to be reunited again.
The entire family is so grateful to see Phoenix building toward full recovery. Despite her differences, she is so loved and has the status of a family princess.
“Little girl is living her best life,” Deanna said in the post-surgery, update video.
Phoenix’s story serves as a testament to the fact that being different is not a disadvantage. If anything, she’s unique. She’s one-of-a-kind. She’s a Golden rarity.
