Choosing the perfect dog from a shelter can sometimes be a difficult decision. After all, they’re not just pets; they’re going to be the next addition to your family.
For a little girl named G, picking the right dog was an easy choice. Her mother, Audra Spurio, recorded a touching video of her toddler pointing to a very sickly pit bull that was shaking in the back of the kennel.
The pit bull, who didn’t even have a name, was in a terrible condition. She smelled bad due to mange, and she had snot running from her nose. “Being labeled a pit bull can doom a shelter dog’s chances of adoption.” This poor dog seemed to have given up on life, but G gave her new hope.
At first, the scared dog panicked and refused to walk when the adults tried to take her out of the kennel. But the moment G took the leash, the pit bull was more than happy to be led around the shelter. The connection between the little girl and the senior dog was almost too sweet for words.
Many shelters have a play area where potential adopters can get to know their new pets. When G and the pit bull finally went outside to play on the grass, the dog seemed to come back to life. Wherever G went, the pit bull followed. When G ran, the pit bull ran right with her. They even squeezed themselves into a nearby dog house to have private chats away from the prying ears of adults.
G was a natural at being a doggy mommy and seemed to instinctively know how to take care of her new friend. When she noticed the pup had a runny nose and crusty eyes, G didn’t hesitate to wipe away the goop with the hem of her pretty blue dress. “Doggy sick, need help,” she promptly informed her mother. G didn’t care about what the dog looked like or smelled like. All she wanted to do was give the dog hugs, kisses, and belly rubs.
When Audra put the pit bull back into the kennel, the dog started shaking uncontrollably. G turned to her and said, “Sick dog, need help, go home.” At that point, it wasn’t even a question that the dog was going home with them. They named her Scarlett, and after signing the final adoption papers, Scarlett found her forever home.
G and Scarlett’s story is a beautiful example of compassion and the special bond between a child and a dog. Their connection is like two old souls meeting again, destined to spend their lives together, forever.
